Find an illustrated manual and completely redesign it.
Find a no-longer-in-publication PDF of an instructional written and hand-drawn by a wry smuggler in the 1970s?
That’s better.
This project was an excuse for me to hand-draw a million little items, vectorize them, and learn about all sorts of shady stuff. I’ve always loved publication design, as an avid reader, and exploring the boundaries running text with this book was thoroughly enjoyable. The original manuscript was outdated, lacking any clear structure, and obviously a passion-project by someone with more passion than organizational sense. My solution highlights the main points and diagrams, preserves the personality of the author, and delivers a sort of humorous and ironic drama that plays off of the subject matter and tone in an engaging and frabjous way.
